River Surveys - Ribera, New Mexico The Pecos River at the Cow Creek confluence was once a beautiful and productive riverine area. Years of cattle grazing have resulted in eroding banks and degraded riparian areas. Although trout are stocked upstream in both rivers, surveys by ACI biologists turned up very few trout, with only sparse populations of native suckers and dace being found. The low trout populations are primarily due to a lack of quality habitat, which results in low growth and no reproduction. In 2007, ACI renovated the stream to increase trout habitat and holding capacity of this stretch of river. The river is stocked with rainbow trout and fish feeders are strategically placed along the river to help ensure that fish remain in the renovated reach. ACi biologists will monitor the stream on an annual basis to ensure that structures are performing as intended and fish abundance and growth exceeds the owners expectations. |
