Stream Surveys and Genetics Testing - Costilla, New Mexico The Rio Grande cutthroat trout is the state fish of New Mexico, and although it has been eliminated in over 90% of its range, it is not listed as an endangered species. Aquatic Consultants was contracted by a land co-op association near the New Mexico/Colorado border to determine habitat suitability and current population status in various streams and ponds. Backpack electrofishing and angling was used to collect trout, and fin clips were taken for genetic analysis. Fin clips were sent to the laboratory to determine genetic purity and test for whirling disease. Results came back that the trout sampled were over 99% pure Rio Grande cutthroat trout, but that they probably also had whirling disease. Although this client decided not to pursue any further work, our results provided valuable information for state and federal agencies. |
