Stream Surveys - Jemez, New Mexico Since 2003, ACI has been contracted by this Federal land trust to conduct semi-annual stream surveys on two streams flowing through the 89,000 acre area near Jemez, NM. The stream surveys provide data to evaluate the effects of limited angling on the condition of brown and rainbow trout. In addition, the effects of elk and cattle grazing on both native and non-native fishes is evaluated in each stream. Random 100 meter sites are sampled in both spring and fall with a backpack electrofisher and populations are determined with the three pass depletion method. ACI biologists have also conducted special projects in the streams, such as a mark-recapture study on brown trout to determine movement and growth, and tributary sampling to determine its influence on the main stream populations. Future work for ACI biologists involves continued stream sampling, along with the development of a flat water management plan, including assessment, renovation, and management of seven lakes. |
