Fisheries & Lake Management

Angler Surveys

Angler surveys (creel surveys) are among the most important professional tools available to manage recreational fisheries. To optimize our ability to stock the proper number of fish and regulate harvest in these waters, ACI biologists need information: information about who and how many are fishing; about what is caught and in what numbers; and about angler preferences and satisfaction. Angler surveys provide this information.

ACI biologists design and conduct angler surveys in various recreational fisheries to monitor angler use, catch and harvest, and angler satisfaction. These are all factors in determining stocking levels in a particular body of water. Typically these surveys consist of survey cards that are distributed as anglers purchase a license, but the surveys sometimes are actual face-to-face interviews which allows for the most accurate data to be collected. Each survey is designed for a specific body of water and results are tabulated on a regular basis so that our biologists can modify stocking and harvest rates at any time.
